Are you a new student? You may have NSS! Fortunately, you can educate and prepare for this affliction by reading ahead.

What is New Student Syndrome (NSS)?

New Student Fears
NSS is generally experienced by people going through extreme life changes and is contracted almost exclusively by college students. College students are particularly susceptible due to the change in home, friends, and daily life structure. NSS can manifest in many ways, but luckily can be overcome and brings with it lasting benefits.

Symptoms and other signs of NSS

Nervous Behavior

  • Overcompensating for simple errors or mistakes. As a new student, you may be more afraid than ever to make a mistake. Have no fear, mistakes will happen and will only help you learn.
  • Overworking to impress peers and staff members. If this is you, remember, you don’t need to be anything more than who you are to impress at CLE. You are here because of you.

Homesickness

  • You may be living on your own for the first time in your life, it is natural to miss home. Don’t let this prevent you from exploring your new home.

Self-critique and comparison (caused by lack of self-confidence)

  • You may find you want to compare yourself with your new peers. There is no comparison to be made, you are you, and that is good enough.

Attention-seeking Behavior

  • One may be tempted to seek attention in a negative way to address shortcomings felt by the individual. Focus on optimistic energy and work to receive positive and affirming attention. If you feel overwhelmed by stress or negative emotions, seek support immediately by the appropriate professionals.

You are now in a new environment, but you are not alone. You have an amazing support system in place and have all the qualities you need to find success. All of these negative symptoms of NSS can be countered with education and support.

Positive side effects of recognizing NSS in your life

  • Extreme optimism – The world is yours!
  • Increased motivation – Take advantage of your newfound motivation to succeed in your sessions and classes.
  • Increased positive attention – This is your time to show off your unique talents and receive the praise you deserve as an amazing individual!
  • Increase in social behavior – You may find yourself more likely to try new things and engage with your new peers while also feeling great acceptance and care.

Treatment

  • Balance – Learning to balance your responsibilities is the key to not only overcoming NSS but for succeeding in life as well. Some simple steps one can take include:
    • Taking breathers – Short breaks can reduce the symptoms of overwhelming feelings and stress and also help you reset your mind and body.
    • Understand your limits – It’s important to know what you can handle and share your limits with those you work with.
    • Create and follow a schedule – This will help you manage work, school, sessions, friends, and family easily.
  • Eat Well and Stay Active – This will create the foundation for a healthy mind and body. If you need guidance, go to www.choosemyplate.com
  • Ask for Help – Asking for help can be challenging, but that is a normal barrier. Realize that everyone has dealt with NSS at some point and being an adult means knowing when you need support.

Cure

There is no current cure for NSS, and NSS can continue to make appearances during times of change. However, it can always be overcome using the treatment above. Understand that the positive side effects can also be maintained, making NSS a rare disorder that can benefit the overall quality of your life. Change is not good or bad, but how you deal with it can define your growth for the future.
