Unique

( yu̇-ˈnēk )

one of a kind, remarkable, special, unusual, not like anything else.

Lots of things in our world are advertised as being unique, pineapple-wasabi is a flavor of ice cream, platinum violet is a new obscure hair color, and you can buy custom handmade cat mugs in the unique gift section of Etsy. It goes without saying that being unique is sort of a brand, it’s fashionable and perhaps the new norm. In an interview with CLE staff and students I found it’s really the simple, everyday things that makes us all truly unique. Here’s a little profile of what makes us all stand out.

Students

Amberlee Stollard

Amberlee of CLE Denver loves stuffed animals!Loves stuffed animals. Has over 15 in her room. Used to arrange them throughout her room, but now has specific locations for them. Prized stuffed animal is her rabbit, Butterscotch she has had since she was a baby and still sleeps with today. Featured stuffed animal is Bibble the puffball giraffe. If you were to buy Amberlee a new stuffed animal, it would need to be a kangaroo!

Alex Fleener

Alex from CLE Denver - aka, theater geekTheater Geek (yes you can call her that lovingly). Loves all things to do with the theater, we are talking lights, stage, action, singing, dancing, acting, MUSICALS!!!

Alex has been taking voice lessons here in Denver for the past two years. She previously took voice lessons in her hometown, Portland, OR for 5 Years. She has seen over 50 musicals in three states. Wicked is by far her favorite. She has seen it three times.

“Defy Gravity” is her favorite song. She quotes it routinely which makes her sounds like a “geek.” If you were to walk into Alex’s apartment you might find her wearing a “Defy Gravity” t-shirt, sitting under her “Defy Gravity” wall decal, on either her phone or computer, scrolling past her “Defy Gravity” screen savers, all while singing you the actual song.

Zach Arlein

Zach - CLE DenverDespite an unassuming wardrobe (with hints of personal flare), Zach is a music buff. To be fair, he is not just a music buff, able to quote you that Eagles song that pops on to the radio, he is what is known as a Hip-Hop Head. He has a dizzying amount of songs on his phone, over 700 to scroll through—I wonder what that equates to in iCloud space? Zach loves some classics we all might know like Kayne West and Eminem, but there are more subterranean beats pulsing through his ear buds than what the average music dabbler might be aware of. Some of his faves at the moment:

NAV – Canadian hip-hop artist, Singh Goraya

French Montana – American-Moroccan hip-hop artist, Karim Kharbouch

Nipsey Hussle – American born rapper from LA, Ermias Asghedom

Travis Scott – American born rapper, Jacques Webster, perhaps best known as Kylie Jenner’s boyfriend/baby daddy

Zach’s current playlist name: Team Little Fish

(I just spent an hour googling who all these people are! I mean people’s unique qualities, characteristics and interests are fun!)

Staff

Tom DiCosoloa

Tom DiCosoloa - CLE DenverAn interesting thing that many might not know about Tom is that he is a vegan. He had an interest in animal rights (through music) as a teen, and after befriending some vegans, learned that switching his diet was no challenge at all! He has been vegetarian for half of his life and vegan for a quarter. He has learned that being vegan is a lifestyle that is healthy, better for the planet, not expensive, and gives him a sense of peace and connection to animals. When he’s not eating his talented girlfriend’s home-cooked meals, they’re out exploring new restaurants in the Denver area.

Rick Smith

Rick at CLE DenverHittin’ the road motor home style. Rick wears many hats at CLE. He is an ILS instructor extraordinaire, he leads the theater and acting group, he does independent tutoring and proctors study hall. He helps with scheduling and job coaching. There probably is not a department Rick has not supported in his 5-year tenure at CLE. While he might have a passion for wearing lots of hats and helping staff and students he has a new-found love, which involves driving massive stretches of road in comfort. Rick is a new owner of a mobile home/RV. It is spacious, it sleeps six, you can make a gourmet meal, shower, watch CNN, you can take your living room to the outdoors! Rick’s goal at some point is to drive across the country. He would like to head along the Southern board of the US to Florida and then eventually (potentially) make his way up the eastern seaboard and drive back to Colorado through the heartlands. Rick’s new hobby is something that people might not know about him but is something that he truly loves to do. He is mobile and free when his is in the RV, getting to see exquisite parts of the country, but with all the comforts of home. I mean why camp when you can glamp?

Rather than crazy ice cream flavors, crazy clothing styles or a whole section of Amazon dedicated to cat gifts, being unique might just be the simple things we enjoy everyday.
