Young adults with autism, learning disabilities, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy and other special needs can successfully transition to independent adulthood with tailored support provided by CLE.

Job Summary

As an expert in specific content subject matter, the CLE Tutor is the catalyst who enables the students to not just learn, but to develop the skills necessary to generalize across other areas. The role of the Tutor, though complex as is may be, is to ultimately help the student help themselves through developing independence. It is of highest importance to the CLE team that the Tutor create a one-on-one or group learning environment that is welcoming, inclusive and safe, so students may grow and develop.

The CLE Tutor provides guidance and instruction on subject matter topics while also seamlessly adapting to various learning styles. With a passion for student development and transformation to reach their potential, the CLE Tutor holds the perfect balance of integrity and knowledge while at the same time proving instruction not only on material, but in their ability to help others understand it. The top three characteristics a CLE tutor must possess are:

Passion: It is our privilege to support and walk alongside the students we serve. If a CLE student senses that you don’t have enough passion related to your instruction then their interest level can significantly decrease resulting in an inefficient tutoring session.

Creativity: We are in the human service industry where no one day or person is alike. A great tutor appreciates and understands this and is able to adjust their teaching method to each student and way of grasping the material.

Persistence: In order to be leading edge, we must go the extra mile. For the topics like math, it may take time for students to understand and master. Tutors need to have a positive attitude coupled with patience and persistence to celebrate the highs and push through the lows.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Consistently provides comprehensive, effective instruction to assigned student(s) in the applicable subject matter, evaluating the student’s needs and tailoring the tutoring session to accommodate those needs.
  • Assist student with executive, organizational and study skills to improve their time management and project management capabilities.
  • Comfortable interacting with a diverse student population and have experience with creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
  • Ability to be a fair-minded and ethical with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Obtains and carefully reviews class syllabus with the student to determine and establish a timeline for covering the necessary material throughout the semester.
  • Works with supervisor to assess need for obtaining any required textbooks for the classes in which students are enrolled.
  • Reviews any class notes taken by the student and evaluates reading assignments pursuant to the syllabus by discussing this material with the student during tutoring session.
  • Completes internal notes providing detailed documentation of the session and next steps.
  • Creates a positive learning environment by removing/eliminating any auditory or visual distractions that interfere with the student’s ability to focus on the subject matter. (i.e. Moving instructional areas, requesting students near decrease their volume or by move to another area, etc).
  • Teaches student(s) to utilize strategies to reduce large quantities of information into smaller fragments, allowing those students who are unable to comprehend or assimilate massive amounts of course material to digest the information on a less challenging level.
  • Obtains permission from supervisor, prior to scheduling any additional tutoring time requested by the student or deemed as necessary by the tutor.
  • Assists in assuring student welfare and safety by monitoring student behavior and habits and reporting any concerns immediately to supervisor. Additionally, reports any observed undue nervousness, tension or apprehension experienced by the student directly to the Supervisor.

  • Education and/or Experience: Completed (or in-progress) Bachelor’s Degree in applicable field or related area with two years of relevant experience, preferably working with special needs students.

  • Passion for the development of students in their content subject matters and beyond for lifelong learning.

  • Creativity to think out-side of the box and problem-solve. Seeing obstacles as opportunities.

  • Persistence and the ability to inspire change. Never give up. Whether a paper due, test on the horizon, writers block, confusion, or lack of focus you have the ability to influence positive change within common student roadblocks.

  • Technology: Proficiency in Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

  • Flexible and adaptable to different student learning styles.

  • Strong administrative and organizational skills with effective written and oral communication.

  • Previous experience in a learning resource center, learning lab or tutorial services center
