I was a crammer in school. I would binge study for days before finals then collapse in exhaustion and disdain. In the downtime afterward, I would seek solace in role-playing video games, where I was free to explore landscapes and caves with my little band of adventurers or spend hours getting into battles with easy enemies in order to increase my experience points, amass gold and buy better weapons and armor.
I’m sure when you reflect on your most transformative moment; you will think of a lesson that you weren’t planning on learning that day. Educators and parents alike call these memories natural learning experiences, and they can be both contrived and spontaneous.
We recently had a roundtable discussion with students from CLE Rockville about this term, which the dictionary defines as: higher-order thinking that enables understanding, analysis, and control of one’s cognitive processes, especially when engaged in learning. Or put simply, thinking about how you think. Why do we want to do this? Because understanding how you think and how you process information can help lead to effective strategies for learning and studying.
Each day as we wake and venture into the world, we strive to impact our communities by being a productive citizen; contributing our skills and responding to one another with simple acts of kindness.
Now that I am close to graduating and getting my license in Cosmetology, I can say it has been the best and most colorful experience I have ever had!
