Every generation has special characteristics that define them. Baby Boomers believe in the value and dignity of hard work. Generation Xers tend to be creative and self-reliant. Born in a world with limitless technology, Millennials are savvy and appreciative of the communities they build around them.

And, as we plunge deeper into the 21st century, Gen Z is rewriting the scripts of entrepreneurship and inclusivity. Central to this reshaping is Gen Z’s celebration of neurodiversity. Specifically, Gen Z is heralding neurodiversity as an entrepreneurial superpower, according to recent research. In a ZenBusiness survey of more than 1,000 U.S. adults between 18 and 25, a staggering 92% of respondents recognized neurodiversity as a significant asset in the entrepreneurial realm. Additionally, 75% said they are aiming for entrepreneurship in their careers, and over half of the Gen Z respondents identify as “definitely” (22%) or “somewhat” (31%) neurodiverse.

Unpacking the Entrepreneurial Strengths of Neurodiversity

So, what factors are driving this transformative perspective? According to the research, a majority of respondents said neurodiverse people are even more likely than others to express each of five key traits often associated with entrepreneurship:

  • Creativity (90%)
  • Authenticity (80%)
  • Hard-working (72%)
  • Perseverance (72%)

Creativity

Startups and small businesses are often propelled by out-of-the-box thinking. Neurodiverse individuals frequently possess unique cognitive frameworks that allow them to approach challenges from refreshing angles. And, whether it’s devising innovative solutions or crafting distinct products, their creative flair can be a powerful differentiator in the business realm

Authenticity

Today’s consumer often goes beyond simply buying products to form connections with brands they feel share their values. In a survey of more than 1,000 American consumers, Asendia found that 75% of them would spend more money with retailers they perceived to be authentic, with 62% saying they would only shop exclusively with authentic retail brands.

Neurodiverse entrepreneurs often bring an unfiltered, genuine approach to their ventures, enhancing their appeal. In a world inundated with ads and messaging, this authentic touch can be a distinctive advantage.

Perseverance

Nancy Doyle, founder of Genius Within, a company specializing in neurodiversity and disability inclusion at work, values the ability to keep pushing forward and trying again in the face of failure and adversity:

“Neurodiverse individuals are trained in perseverance from day one in our lives. Our very existence is one in which we are told that we are failing in one way or another because we cannot meet a set of standards created by society that define what is “normal.”

Many neurodiverse individuals, having weathered life’s storms, have developed a tenacity that’s indispensable in the unpredictable world of entrepreneurship. Their lived experiences often translate to an unparalleled resilience in the face of business setbacks.

Hard-working

JPMorgan Chase launched their Autism at Work pilot program in 2015 with four software testers who were on the spectrum. The company found that their neurodiverse hires were, on average, 90% to 140% more productive than employees who had been at the company for five or 10 years.

Driven by a desire to prove their worth or overcome societal misconceptions, many neurodiverse individuals exhibit an unwavering commitment to their endeavors. This determination often translates to long hours, meticulous planning and an unyielding commitment to their business goals.

Hustle

There is no doubt that neurodiversity can provide a competitive advantage in the workplace, particularly when it comes to adapting to new environments and change. With the increased adoption of special accommodations and assistive technologies that help acclimate to various work environments, neurodiverse individuals have honed their ability to adjust quickly, a trait invaluable in the ever-evolving entrepreneurial world.

Neurodiversity in the Context of Employment

While the entrepreneurial strengths of neurodiverse individuals are clear, it’s essential to view these findings in a broader context. Neurodiverse individuals have often been marginalized in traditional employment settings, and misunderstandings or misconceptions about their conditions have lead to underemployment or even unemployment.

Neurodiverse people are more likely to be unemployed than people with any other disability. According to the Werth Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Connecticut, unemployment for neurodivergent adults runs between 30-40%. This is three times the rate for people with disability, and eight times the rate for people without disability.

However, as Gen Z steps into the limelight, there’s hope that this narrative will change. Their heightened appreciation for neurodiversity can usher in a new era of inclusive employment, where neurodiverse individuals are recognized not for their conditions but for the unique skills they bring

CLE’s Vision for Neurodiverse Students

At CLE, we’re not just passive observers of this change; we’re active participants. By providing a nurturing environment where neurodiverse students can hone their academic, career, social and independent living skills, we’re ensuring that they are well-prepared to seize entrepreneurial opportunities. A cornerstone of our approach is the Greenwood System™, a comprehensive process and report that delves deep into the psyche of our students, uncovering their innate strengths, passions and values. With this understanding, we can guide our students toward careers and entrepreneurial ventures that resonate fully within their core.

In doing so, we hope to create a generation of neurodiverse entrepreneurs who not only succeed in business but also inspire others to challenge societal norms and expectations.

The winds of change are blowing, and they’re bringing with them a refreshing perspective on entrepreneurship and neurodiversity. As Gen Z leads the way equipped with a newfound appreciation for the strengths of neurodiverse individuals, the future of business looks bright.

CLE stands ready to guide and support this new generation, ensuring that they not only navigate the challenges of the modern world—but also redefine success on their terms.
