Young adults with autism, learning disabilities, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy and other special needs can successfully transition to independent adulthood with tailored support provided by CLE.

Job Summary

The Independent Living Skills Instructor position is accountable for students’ overall development of skills necessary for activities of daily living. This position is responsible for assisting in assessing individual student functioning levels and providing direct instruction across the ILS domains. The domains include health, safety, hygiene, food management, money management, housekeeping, housing, transportation, job seeking and maintenance skills, community integration, legal rights, and interpersonal skills. This position requires both individual and group instruction. In addition to ILS instruction, this position may include leading student social activities and facilitating positive interactions for students amongst their peers and others in the community during social outings.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Assists Education Coordinator or supervisor in completing CLE ILS Inventories to assess each student’s current functioning level, across all domains.
  • Consistently provides comprehensive, effective instruction to assigned student(s) in the applicable subject matter, evaluating the student’s needs and tailoring the ILS session to accommodate those needs.
  • Teaches students individually and in small groups how to clean and properly maintain all aspects of their home including bathroom, kitchen, bedroom and common areas.
  • Leads small groups in healthy cooking classes. Uses current resources to teach a range of simple to more complex recipes. Models for students appropriate use of kitchen tools and ensures that the student learns to perform these skills on their own.
  • Visually verifies student’s medication is filled in weekly organizer. Verbally verifies with the Student that they are taking their medication and may assist to ensure refills are up to date. Medication organization may be in conjunction with ILS Coordinator or Director of Psychological Services.
  • Assists students in making weekly meal plans and grocery lists.
  • Completes notes on student instructional sessions in the CLE database within 24 hours and reports all questions and concerns to the Education Coordinator or supervisor within the same time frame. Actively details any concerns related to student performance and progress.
  • Participates in scheduled staff meetings as part of ongoing training as well as strategy development and curriculum design for individual student and group session needs.
  • Models appropriate hygiene for students and facilitates student instruction on hygiene and personal appearance.
  • Instructs small groups including but not limited to: health, hygiene, fitness, transportation, community awareness, & safety.
  • Controls the learning environment by removing/eliminating any auditory or visual distractions that interfere with the student’s ability to focus on the subject matter. (i.e., instructing other students to move to another area).
  • Manages or participates in other projects as assigned.

1. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in related field with 3-5 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in executive functioning and deficits of young adults with Learning Disabilities and Pervasive Developmental Disabilities is preferred.

2. CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid state driver’s license with appropriate endorsement.

3. LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

4. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to perform basic math functions and calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages.

5. REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to think and act quickly and calmly in an emergency situation and make independent decisions.

6. PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk and hear; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally be required to climb or balance and stoop or kneel. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move a minimum of 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distant, and peripheral vision, color and depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

7. WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment for this position is generally a typical office setting. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee may occasionally be exposed to students who may ask inappropriate personal questions, display socially unacceptable personal behaviors, use profanity and sexually explicit phrases, make insulting remarks or threats regarding appearance, age, sex, or race, and exhibit defiance, dishonesty, and assaultive or self-destructive behaviors. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, and may be subject to occasional travel as required by facility needs. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
