The CLE team is looking to add a versatile, proactive, detail-oriented, positive individual who enjoys making a difference, being part of a team and takes pride in their work.

The Independent Living Skills Instructor and Social Coach position is accountable for students’ overall development of skills necessary for activities of daily living. This position is responsible for assisting in assessing individual student functioning levels and providing direct instruction across the ILS domains. The domains include health, safety, hygiene, food management, money management, housekeeping, housing, transportation, job seeking and maintenance skills, community integration, legal rights, and interpersonal skills. This position is also responsible for building rapport with assigned CLE students, encouraging social involvement, and facilitating appropriate social interactions with peers, staff, and the community. The Social Coach has the appropriate clinical background to recognize problem areas and implement corrective strategies to help the student navigate real-world experiences. This position requires both individual and group instruction.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Builds a low-key, friendly, and fun relationship with the student, encouraging realistic social involvement in CLE and extracurricular activities and facilitating an appreciation for the balance of work and play.

  • Assists the student in making social plans and engages in appropriate activities with the student; such as going to lunch, the mall, ball games, playing video games together, etc.

  • Models basic social conventions and promotes appropriate student interactions with peers, staff, and the community at large.

  • Helps student become aware of his/her own view of the world as it relates to others and helps the student to understand other people’s perspectives so that they can better traverse future and existing social contexts.

  • Encourages student to think through problems in social judgment and reinforces healthy choices.

  • Facilitates social engagement groups and/or activities.

  • Responsible for coaching and instruction to students individually and in small groups on topics related to household maintenance, organization management, health and hygiene.

  • Leads small groups in healthy cooking including planning, and preparation ranging from simple to more complex techniques and recipes. Models appropriate use of kitchen tools to ensure the students learn proper use and function on their own.

  • Visually verifies student’s medication is filled in weekly organizer. Verbally verifies with the Student that they are taking their medication and may assist to ensure refills are up to date. Medication organization may be in conjunction with ILS Coordinator or Director of Psychological Services.

  • Assists students in making weekly meal plans and grocery lists.

  • Controls the learning environment by removing/eliminating any auditory or visual distractions that interfere with the student’s ability to focus on the subject matter. (i.e., instructing other students to move to another area).

  • Completes notes on student instructional sessions in the CLE database within 24 hours

  • Reports red or yellow flag issues to their supervisor immediately.

  • Participates in scheduled staff meetings as part of ongoing training as well as strategy development and curriculum design for individual student and group session needs.

  • Attends weekly group and individual supervisor with their supervisor.

  • Transports students to and from activities as necessary.

Position Qualifications

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Special Education, Social Work, or related field, and 1-3 years’ experience working with neurodiverse individuals.

    Preferred: Master’s degree or Master’s candidate in any of the above fields with equivalent work experience with a neurodiverse population.

    Working knowledge of Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

  • Valid state driver’s license with appropriate endorsement

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, students, parents, and the general public.

  • Ability to perform basic math functions and calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to think and act quickly and calmly in an emergency situation and make independent decisions.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk and hear; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally be required to climb or balance and stoop or kneel. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distant, and peripheral vision, color and depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

  • The work environment for this position is generally a typical office setting. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee may
    occasionally be exposed to students who may ask inappropriate personal questions, display socially unacceptable personal behaviors, use profanity and sexually explicit phrases, make insulting remarks or threats regarding appearance, age, sex, or race, and exhibit defiance, dishonesty, and assaultive or self destructive behaviors. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, and may be subject to occasional travel as required by facility needs. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
